It is not known with certainty , where or when the Knotted-Rugs were first
made. They most likely came into being sometime between the 4th and the 2nd
millennium B.C., somewhere in Asia. The rearing of sheep, the prime source
of carpet wool being a traditional nomad occupation, and the necessity of
thick coverings for people having to endure extreme cold could have caused
the development of the craft of weaving to supersede the use of rough animal
skins for warmth. Yet, there is always a possibility that carpets could have
sprung from the technical skill of settled societies living in Persia or the
Armenia of today. The technique of the "knots", as we presently know it , is
the fruit of a very long evolution ,the point of convergence and synthesis
of various processes and kinds of know-how far removed in time and space ,
or else developed collaterally. |

However , apart from the so called "Pazyrk carpet" , from the
end of the 5th century
B.C. ,Seljuk rug from the 13th century and a Spanish rug from the 14th
century , the earliest preserved carpets date only from the 15th century.
Thus ,the genesis of the carpet (pile) can be only understood through
ancient literature and Archaeological fragments. To generalize, the weaving
of flat carpets with no pile (Kelims) was developed long before the pile
carpet was known. Countries all over had the talent of flat weaving
including Egypt and Mesopotamia. Whereas the weaving of pile carpets
originated somewhere between Mongolia and Anatolia. Though Oriental rug
researchers still have conflicting insinuations and implications towards the
origins of pile rugs . It is definitely certain however, that Asia was the
first continent to produce rugs and where ever it originated, it was
definitely the nomadic wanderers of the ancient times who created it. |
